After lying moribund for decades science fiction cinema took off in the 1950’s, and over 150 science fiction films were released in the U.S. during that decade. Nevertheless, in terms of respectability sci-fi ranked just above pornography, and with a few notable exceptions (The Day the Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet) sci-fi films were churned out by low-budget producers and studios. Many of those films have since become cult favorites among discerning cognoscenti of the, shall we say, more colorful expressions of the cinematic art as it pertains to genre films.
