Neglected diseases, or more specifically neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), refer to major global health problems that affect hundreds of millions of people. Despite the huge burden of these diseases worldwide, there is little or no interest in the pharmaceutical industry in developing effective drugs because these are diseases of poor people in poor regions of the world. James McKerrow, Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences at UC San Diego, explores the moral and ethical considerations, and the challenges of developing vaccines, diagnostics, and drugs for these diseases in the absence of profitable financial markets.
