Modern societies have made many gains based on individualism and emphasis on thought and the material world. But Thomas Scheff, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at UC Santa Barbara, argues that it appears that that this combination may have had unfortunate effects on our social-emotional lives: widespread alienation and emotion problems.
