Drs. Andre Jacques and William McCauley present the Quebec and Ontario experiences with assessing physicians based on age. Whereas U.S. medical boards refer out for assessment and remediation of physicians, Canadian boards take an active role in these activities and have robust assessment programs (for general quality assurance and as a result of complaints, investigations or discipline). Recognizing age as one risk factor among others, Quebec and Ontario routinely screen/assess the 70+ population as a whole. Data showed significant margins between the 70+ population and younger physicians in terms of post-assessment outcomes. (#23199)
