Press Release: UCSD-TV Coming to Carlsbad and North County Cable (7/2007)

UCSD-TV COMING TO CARLSBAD AND NORTH COUNTY CABLE

Launching July 11 on Time Warner, Channel 18

LA JOLLA, CA – After years of public demand, UCSD-TV is coming to Carlsbad and North County on Time Warner Cable, channel 18. The non-commercial channel operated by UC San Diego will launch July 11 on Time Warner’s North County system, including Carlsbad and portions of Solana Beach, Encinitas, San Marcos and Vista.

UCSD-TV will share channel 18 with the California Channel, with UCSD-TV beginning its broadcast day at 4pm and concluding at midnight, seven days a week. The channel launch will take place on July 11 when Time Warner, which took over Adelphia cable in 2006, realigns its channels to match the rest of its San Diego system.

As July’s line up demonstrates, UCSD-TV features a wide range of programs, from the latest in science, health and public affairs to exclusive backstage visits at local cultural venues. On July 13 at 7pm, best selling author Michael Pollan discusses “The Omnivore’s Dilemma,” a definitive account of the American way of eating. On July 19 at 9pm, “Health Matters” host Dr. David Granet welcomes Dr. Cheryl Saenz of the UCSD Moores Cancer Center for an eye-opening discussion about HPV (human papillomavirus) and the new vaccine. And Friday nights at 8pm, UCSD-TV presents La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest series, opening doors to the creative process and the minds of those who make it all happen, such as Tan Dun, Mozart and jazz legend Chick Corea (more information at www.ucsd.tv/lajollamusicsociety).

Premiering on UCSD-TV in September is "The Making of Place: Solana Beach," featuring renowned urban planner Fred Kent leading a "place-making" workshop with Solana Beach Mayor Lesa Heebner, developer Greg Shannon, and dozens of others grappling with how to make this coastal city more livable, walkable and attractive.

Despite a demonstrated demand over the years by North County customers of Daniels Cablevision, then Adelphia, UCSD-TV was continually excluded from the channel lineup. Upon acquiring the system from Adelphia in 2006, Time Warner elected to make UCSD-TV part of its local basic channel line-up. UCSD-TV has been available throughout the remainder of San Diego on Time Warner cable since the fall of 1993, on Cox Cable since 2000, and via UHF (no cable) on channel 35 since the channel first launched in early 1993.

“We are thrilled that UCSD-TV is finally available to subscribers across the North County,” commented Lynn Burnstan, Managing Director of UCSD-TV. “UCSD has valued ties with residents throughout these communities, so it is important that we are able to share with them the tremendous breadth and depth of knowledge UCSD-TV offers.”
