Local Music Organizations Shine During UCSD-TV’s Triple-Play Premiere

Performances and backstage visits to San Diego Opera, SummerFest and Philip Glass Premiere

LA JOLLA, CA – UCSD-TV kicks off its 15th year with three musical premieres that include visits to San Diego Opera, La Jolla Symphony and Chorus, and La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest series. UCSD-TV’s Triple-Play Premiere airs every Friday night from January 11 through February 15.

First to appear in the Triple-Play Premiere are six programs from La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest 2007. The series airs Fridays at 8 p.m. and includes SummerFest’s Music Director in “An Evening with Cho-Liang Lin” (January 11); a selection of new and encore SummerFest works on “Premieres & Reprises” (January 18); “Rule, Britannia!” (January 25), featuring rare chamber works by two renowned British composers; “Brahms’ Sextet No. 2 in G Major” (February 1); and the seldom-performed gem “Walton’s Sonata in A Minor” (February 8). Visit for bonus footage, video archives from seasons past and more.

Next in the Triple-Play Premiere is “San Diego Opera Spotlight: Tannhäuser” on January 25 at 9:30 p.m. This is the 12th season of the “San Diego Opera Spotlight” series, which provides a rare opportunity to meet the cast, director and conductor and see how each performance of San Diego Opera’s season comes together. A new program premieres the Friday before each production’s opening night at the San Diego Civic Center. In addition to “Tannhäuser,” this season includes “Mary, Queen of Scots” (February 15), “Cavalleria Rusticana & Pagliacci” (March 21), “Aida” (April 11), and “The Pearl Fishers” (May 2). Visit for details about this series and broadcast information for “San Diego OperaTalk! With Nick Reveles,” also airing in 2008.

The Triple-Play Premiere wraps up on February 15 at 8p.m. with “Starting with Light…,” a UCSD-TV special featuring the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus’ North American premiere of Philip Glass’ “Cello Concerto.” The program includes performance footage and exclusive interviews with Glass, Music Director Steven Schick, and cellist Wendy Sutter. Other works featured are “The Light That Fills the World” by Alaskan composer John Luther Adams, and Beethoven’s jubilant “Fourth Symphony.”

UCSD-TV celebrates 15 years of Television Unlike Anything Else in 2008. UCSD-TV airs on Cox Ch.135, Time Warner Ch.18, and UHF (no cable) Ch. 35.
