This Saturday: BUSTER KEATON

Like Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton had a native gift for movement; but unlike the Little Tramp, he had very modern cinematic instincts combined with a gift for engineering gags that propelled him far ahead of any of his contemporaries. For decades he was unjustly regarded as just a forgotten pie-thrower with a "stone face" and a porkpie hat. Today Keaton is revered for his movies from the Twenties, a body of work that has improved with age and speaks to us all from the viewpoint of an artist who is both sullied and pure, numb and passionate, cynical but hopeful.
