This Saturday: SERGEI EISENSTEIN

The films of Russian pioneer Sergei Eisenstein are challenging on practically every level, but the rewards are commensurate. In Eisenstein's work loose metaphorical associations displace narrative continuity, and images related only by analogy intrude on chronological narrative sequences. Time itself in fluid in an Eisenstein film: physical action is by turns slowed to a grueling pace and sped up to a frenzy. And yet Eisenstein did not make movies as mere formalist experiments, but with a specific political intent: he wanted aesthetics to inform and illuminate history, and to move audiences to social action.
